Hi John

I have a unfished migration of a SBS2003 to SBS2008 server. The SBS2003 wont allow the uninstall of the Exchange server becuase of permision problems and cant really demote the server until this is done.

Another thing is that it also shuts down because of the SBS2008 server.

Is there a way to remove all the settings manually from the SBS2008 that is in the Active directory and Exchange link that is also still present.

Hi John,

Just wanted to show my appreciation for this article and to say how cool it is that you're still supporting it over a year after its creation.

I'm in the midst of a migration myself and I'm sure I will be using this as a reference throughout the process.

Spencer,

Essentially, what you'll need to do is hook the new server up to the network, move all of the FSMO roles over to it, migrate Exchange to it, and then finally decommission the old server (at which point you could load a different Server operating system, such as Windows Server 2008 R2, onto the old server's hardware). Note that you absolutely cannot leave two Small Business Servers running in the same domain, as the one that does not have all of the FSMO roles will start randomly shutting down after a grace period is exceeded. This is all very delicate work, so I would recommend finding someone who has some experience doing migrations such as this to help.

Best of luck,
John

I have an SBS2k8 server that is about to get upgraded to completely new hardware. What is your recommendations to take the existing SBS2k8 server and move it to the new hardware which will run SBS2k8 as well? Will this guide prep me for that event and/or are there any caveats I should be aware of. Thanks!

SBS 2008 no longer supports running ISA Server as an integrated part of the solution, so yes before you can upgrade to SBS2008 you need to switch to a separarte router (e.g. a $40 Linksys router if that's all you need). There are a lot of small business routers available out there which are loaded with features.

hello john

so lt me get this right, you cant migrative for 2003 sbs to 2008 sbs if the 2003 server is also the gate way (well im doing now and i cant get past that part) does it mean ill have to redo the network
